Mr. Sandal (サンダルさん, Sandaru-san) is a mysterious foreign-looking man who wanders around Manoyama. His true identity is Alexandre Cena Davis Celibidache, a vagabond artist known for his paintings and music.
Appearance[]
Mr. Sandal is a young man with shoulder-length blond hair and blue eyes. He wears a khaki cloak over a black turtleneck sweater, denim pants and brown sandals. He is often seen carrying a light brown bucket bag, as well as musical instruments, notably a ukulele and a harmonica.
Personality[]
Adding to his mysterious character is his tendency to speak in vague lines in fluent Japanese. Although seemingly friendly, his unusual personality makes him somehow unapproachable.
Chronology[]
Mr. Sandal first appeared as a lone passenger in Takamizawa's last bus trip during the night where Yoshino Koharu found out about her year of duties as queen of the Chupakabura Kingdom.[1] He also appeared personally to buy a box of manju from Yoshino after watching the video she and her friends made to promote the manju buns, commenting that manju "were scary".[2] While Yoshino was interviewing the townsfolk about their sentiments of Manoyama, Mr. Sandal is seen sketching a harvested white turnip.[3]
Trivia[]
- Mr. Sandal usually speaks in the preview of the next episode, revealing his accurate pronunciation of English words.
- Due to his music talent, eccentricity and name similarity Mr. Sandal's real name could be an indirect reference to the famous Romanian composer and conductor, Sergiu Celibidache (1912-1996).
- "Alexander S. D. Celibidache" is also the pseudonym of the P.A. Works staff, the makers of Sakura Quest.
- Considering that the title of series comes from a novel that Sandal wrote in the final episode, its pretty much a given that they are the same person.
